Blind Faith Science Fact
Blindfaith/sciencefact questions systems of belief – do the certainties of scientific rationalism debase the ‘magic’ of life, the ‘faith’ of religion? A cast fibreglass figure gazes up through a rectangular frame beyond which his mirror image is looking down. This is not a ‘formalist’ sculpture, it doesn’t aspire to heroic ‘truth to materials’ – rather it shares affinities with sculptors such as Juan Munoz who used illusion and ‘tricks’ to create a theatrical ’scene’ in his installations. Cooper aims to open sculpture to a larger frame of reference by including optical illusion – in order to reject the obsession with the physical object.
